We are working on understanding numbers to 100. In order to do that we are learning about place value i.e., ones, tens and hundreds. Yesterday and today we have been breaking apart (expanded form 30 and 4) and putting numbers together (standard form 34).
We have been using tent cards to physically manipulate numbers.

"Can you build me 34."
"Now, can you break it apart?"
"Good work! There are 3 tens and 4 ones."
You can download tent cards here. Scroll down to where it says "Blackline Masters for the Classroom." They are the "Place Value Tents, Units and Tens."
If you print these off at home they are a very useful way for kids to understand the difference between ones and tens.
1. You can ask you child to build you specific numbers and then ask them to say
"There are ___ tens and ____ ones."
2. You can even give them hints and they can guess what number you want them to build
