TOMORROW Thursday, September 5th there will be an open house from 5:00pm-6:00pm. This is a time for you to come and see the classroom and meet me. Later in September there will be one-on-one interviews where we can have deeper conversations.
Throughout the year we will be focusing on the following reading strategies.
1. Look at the pictures.
2. Say the first sound.
3. Slowly stretch each letter sound.
4. Break the word into chunks you know.
5. Try to re-read the sentence. Think about what would make sense.
6. Skip the tricky word. Read to the end and go back and try it again.
7. Flip the vowel sound.
8. Carefully real all the parts of the word.
Today we focused on the first reading strategy, look at the picture. The kid friendly word we use to remember this strategy is "Eagle Eye." We did a picture walk together as a class and looked at all of the pictures in a story. Students described what we happening in the picture. I then read the story to the kids confirming how GOOD they were at reading the pictures. When students are learning to read it is important for them to start by looking at the picture. The picture will give them hints as to what is happening and what words might be on the page.
