We start most math classes with a warmup activity.  We have been focusing on Number Sense and Addition in our warmup activities.  It is important for us to know all of the combinations that make ten "Number Buddies" as we call them.

0+10=10            10+0=10
1+9=10               9+1=10
2+8=10               8+2=10
3+7=10               7+3=10
4+6=10               6+4=10
5+5=10               5+5=10

We also understand that when we are adding the order of numbers do not matter.  This will be important for us to know when we begin to add larger numbers later in the year.

Here is a fun song we have been playing to help us remember our number buddies.

We have been using Power of Ten Cards to play some fun games.

Please feel free to print the Power of Ten Cards (in color OR black and white it doesn't matter).
You can play any of these three games to practice remembering our Number Buddies.

GAME 1. Capture
- make one pile with your cards
- flip over one card
- who ever says the sentence first wins the card
i.e., if you flip a 7 you would say "7+3=10!"

GAME 2. Memory
- first you make 4 rows of 5 cards so that all 20 cards are facing down
- one player flips over a card and if they get 10 (on their first flip) they get to keep it
- if they get a 4 then they are trying to find a 6
- if they do not get a 6 they flip over both cards and the next player goes
- we are trying to get pairs that make ten
- who ever has the most pairs at the end wins

GAME 3. Go Fish
- give each player 4 cards
- put the rest in a pile in the middle
- if you have a 3 in your hand you will be asking if anyone has a 7 (we are trying to make pairs that add up to 10)
- if you do not have the 7 you say "Go Fish"
