This morning we were talking about oral storytelling.  In Nunavut oral storytelling is a tradition that they continue today.  Stories were used to learn new information, entertainment, and to teach children lessons.

We listened to the beginning of A Promise is a Promise.  A story about imaginary monsters that live under the ice.  The story was used to scare children so they would not go near the cracks in the ocean.

Robert Munsch wrote a story based on this Inuit tale. Listen if you would like.

We are practicing how to tell oral stories.  We are starting by retelling the story called The Mitten written by Jan Brett. Sawyer brought up a good point.  She asked, "How are we going to remember all of these animals?  There are so many!"

Good thing, we are going to use props to assist us.  We colored the animals, cut them out and labeled them 1-8 in the order they appear in the story.

This afternoon, each of us had a chance to orally retell the story to our buddy (grade 4 partner).  Our buddy class read The Hat, also written by Jan Brett.
After we shared our story we worked with our buddies to fill out a Venn Diagram comparing the two stories. Grade twos where experts on The Mitten and grade 4s where experts on The Hat.

If you would like to listen to the stories at home here are the links.
